菲 力普是一名旅居美國的德國記者，事業碰到不順的他，決定先回自己的家鄉德國去。在機場卻碰到罷工，只有隔天有一班前往荷蘭阿姆斯特丹的班機。並遇到了一對 母女，約定明日彼此照應一起搭往阿姆斯特丹。沒想到母親卻失約了，丟下了小女孩愛麗絲，於是菲力普只好自己帶著愛麗絲前往荷蘭，並開始尋訪愛麗斯的外婆。 一路上菲力普與愛麗絲慢慢培養出奇妙的感情。過往的旅途上曾是那樣的迷惘無依，追尋的是自我、真實、還是生命中最重要的東西？又或許只是一絲絲互信互需的 柔情。此片為「公路電影三部曲」的第一部。(中文系 林易柔)

An unusual friendship blossoms between a German journalist on the road in the United States and a precocious nine-year-old girl abandoned by her mother. Inventive and witty, Wenders reflects on the influences of American pop culture on postwar Europe. Accepted to be one of Wenders' most poignant films and often compared to Chaplin's The Kid, Alice in the Cities was the first of Wim Wenders' films to be shot in part in the United States and subsequently won the 1974 German Critics Prize.
